Chris Tomlin Bio

Chris Tomlin was born in Grand Saline, Texas, into a musical family. He received his first guitar from his dad around age 11 and began writing songs in his early teens. By age 13 he was singing in his local church, and at 14 he penned his first worship song. In college, he studied psychology at Texas A&M, while leading worship through a campus group called Breakaway. During those years, a friendship with Louie Giglio helped steer Chris Tomlin into full-time worship ministry.

Career & Influence

Chris Tomlin released his first major album The Noise We Make in 2001, marking his national breakthrough. Over the years, his songs like “How Great Is Our God,” “Our God,” and “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” became global worship staples. He has scored over twenty number-one Christian singles and dozens of top-ten hits. Through his albums and tours, Chris Tomlin has led thousands into worship and encouraged worship communities everywhere. His 2022 project Always, with songs like Holy Forever, exemplifies his heart: to center worship and help people connect deeply with God.

Impact & Recognition

Chris Tomlin has sold millions of albums globally and amassed billions of streams. TIME magazine once called him “the most often sung artist in the world.” He’s won a Grammy, many Billboard awards, and dozens of Dove Awards. In 2016 he became one of just four artists (in any genre) to receive a SoundExchange award for over a billion digital radio streams. His influence also extends to co-writing, church leadership, and encouraging spiritual growth in worship leaders.

Chris Tomlin’s Personal Life & Heart

Chris Tomlin married Lauren Bricken on November 9, 2010, and they have three daughters. They live near Franklin, Tennessee, in a home they’ve called “Peacefield.” His faith is rooted in honesty — he’s written songs that wrestle with doubt, longing, and hope. Chris Tomlin often says worship is more than music: it’s dialogue with God, even in the hardest seasons. He continues to tour, release music, and support worship leaders to carry Christ’s light into their communities.
