About John Van Deusen
John Van Deusen is an indie artist who refuses to stay in one lane. Rooted in Anacortes, Washington, he blends raw honesty, melodic hooks, and spiritual depth in everything he writes. Since 2004, John Van Deusen has been writing, recording, and performing with remarkable consistency. Across bands, solo projects, and worship experiments, he keeps circling the same big themes: faith, doubt, hope, and the human heart. That mix makes John Van Deusen feel both disarmingly vulnerable and bold.
The Lonely Forest Years
For much of his twenties, John Van Deusen fronted the beloved indie rock band The Lonely Forest. With the band, he played major festivals, toured nationally, and honed his voice as a frontman. They shared stages with acts like Death Cab for Cutie and even performed on late-night television. Press outlets took notice, and John Van Deusen quickly earned a reputation as a compelling vocalist and songwriter. When The Lonely Forest went on indefinite hiatus in 2014, he quietly began a new chapter.
The (I Am) Origami Journey
As a solo artist, John Van Deusen launched the ambitious multi-part series (I Am) Origami. Albums like Every Power Wide Awake, Marathon Daze, and A Catacomb Hymn pushed him deeper into confessional, faith-infused indie rock. Through these records, he wrestled openly with God, culture, mental health, and his own contradictions. John Van Deusen often describes himself not as a “Christian artist,” but as a Christian who makes music. The result is a body of work that sounds both deeply introspective and surprisingly hopeful.
Exploratory Worship and Joyful Noise
More recently, John Van Deusen has stepped boldly into worship with a large-scale double album project. On the sprawling As Long As I Am In The Tent of This Body I Will Make A Joyful Noise, he stretches what worship can sound like. The project spans dozens of songs, mixing praise, lament, ecstatic joy, and uncomfortable honesty in classic John Van Deusen fashion. It has been described as boundary-pushing worship that refuses cliché. It feels like someone wrestling with God in real time, which is exactly where he tends to live creatively.
Life, Faith, and Community
Offstage, John Van Deusen is rooted in Anacortes with his wife and two children. That small-town rhythm keeps him grounded while his music travels far beyond the Washington coastline. Through interviews and lyrics, he speaks candidly about doubt, deconstruction, and rediscovered faith. For listeners tired of polished answers, John Van Deusen offers something better: honest questions sung with stubborn hope. In every season, he keeps chasing one thing; songs that tell the truth and still dare to praise.
