Tasha Layton’s Bio
Tasha Layton, born on October 27, 1982, in Pauline, South Carolina, grew up in a Southern Baptist household and later converted to the Assemblies of God. During her teenage years, she faced a crisis of faith following a split in her church, leading her to explore various religions in search of truth. This journey included attending Buddhist meditation camps, visiting mosques and synagogues, and studying mysticism in Europe. Ultimately, Tasha Layton returned to Christianity, finding solace in a small church she attended about an hour away from her home. She pursued higher education at The King’s Seminary in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, earning a Master of Divinity degree.
Career Beginnings
After completing her studies, Tasha Layton served as a worship leader for four years and began working as a session vocalist in Los Angeles. In 2010, she auditioned for Season 9 of American Idol, advancing to the third round of Hollywood Week before being eliminated. Shortly thereafter, she secured a position as a background vocalist for pop artist Katy Perry, touring internationally and performing on prominent stages. Her versatile voice was also featured in productions for Disneyland, Cirque du Soleil, and Nickelodeon.
Transition to Christian Music
In 2013, Tasha Layton relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to focus on her solo career in Christian music and became an instructor at Trevecca Nazarene University. She signed with BEC Recordings and released her debut single, “I Belong to You,” in 2018, followed by “Love Lifting Me,” which reached the top 25 on Billboard’s Christian Airplay and Christian AC Airplay charts. Her 2019 debut EP, Love Running Wild, showcased her dynamic vocal abilities and heartfelt songwriting.
Breakthrough and Recent Works
Tasha Layton’s 2020 single, “Into the Sea (It’s Gonna Be OK),” marked a significant breakthrough, elevating her into Billboard’s Top 5 Female Christian Artists that year. In 2021, “Look What You’ve Done” became her first top ten single on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart and her first number one on the Christian Airplay chart. Her debut album, How Far, released in May 2022, further solidified her presence in the Christian music scene. The title track achieved top five status on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart and became her second number one on Christian Airplay.
Tasha’s Personal Life
Tasha Layton is married to Keith Everette Smith, a GRAMMY and GMA Dove Award-winning producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and member of TobyMac’s Diverse City Band. The couple resides in Nashville with their two children, balancing family life with their musical careers.
