The Heritage

Ever felt that nudge to reach out to someone, share something, or take a step that seemed audacious? Most of us ignore those promptings. But what if you didn’t? In this episode, we sit down with The Heritage—a worship team from a small South Carolina church whose obedience to a simple prompting changed everything.

From writing songs in their church basement to getting a text from Chris Tomlin, their story will challenge how you think about divine timing, faithfulness, and what God can do through ordinary obedience.

You’ll hear about:

  • The dog breeder who wouldn’t take no for an answer

  • Why sometimes your lowest moments are when breakthrough comes

  • How staying connected to your local church opened doors they never imagined

  • What it’s like navigating sudden opportunities while staying grounded

  • If you’ve ever wondered whether that prompting you feel is worth following, this conversation will give you the courage to say yes—even when you can’t see the outcome.

Listen now and discover what’s possible when you stop second-guessing and start stepping out.

About The Heritage

Many people dream of large impact around the world, but The Heritage never saw it coming. Joshua Phillips was just a drummer-turned-worship-pastor at his family’s church in Graniteville, South Carolina. His grandfather started Christian Heritage Church, his dad pastored for 30 years, and his mom led worship before him. It was the kind of generational ministry story you hear about but rarely see. Then everything changed with one simple decision to start writing songs.

Monday Morning Songwriting Sessions

In fall 2022, Joshua and youth pastor Jacob Randall made a commitment that would alter their lives forever. They blocked out Monday mornings at 10 a.m. for songwriting sessions. No grand plans, no record deal dreams—just two guys writing songs for their local congregation. The Heritage began in those humble Monday meetings, crafting worship songs from their hearts for their community. They figured maybe 800 people would ever hear their music, and that felt like enough.

The God-Sized Surprise

By September 2023, The Heritage had recorded an independent album called “Home” featuring songs like “The Promise.” They planned to release it quietly to their church family and maybe a few hundred others. But God had different plans involving a dog breeder named Bill Holly and a flash drive. What happened next reads like something out of a movie script. A series of divine appointments led to a text message that would change everything for The Heritage.

Staying Grounded While Soaring High

Despite their rapid rise, The Heritage remains rooted in their local church community. Joshua continues serving as worship pastor at Christian Heritage Church, where this whole journey began. The Heritage tours with major artists while maintaining their heart for authentic worship. They’ve learned that staying connected to their home base keeps them grounded in their calling. The Heritage proves that God can use anyone willing to be obedient, no matter how small their starting point.

The Heart Behind the Music

What sets The Heritage apart isn’t just their sound—it’s their story of ordinary obedience leading to extraordinary outcomes. They write songs that connect people to Jesus, whether in a small church sanctuary or a packed arena. The Heritage believes their music is meant to be arrows shot into the world, landing wherever God directs them. Their journey from Monday morning songwriting sessions to national recognition shows what happens when you follow God’s promptings. The Heritage continues writing, leading worship, and trusting God with whatever comes next.
